Character Name: Naoto Shirogane
Character Canon: Persona 4 Golden (OU)
Character Age/Gender: 16/Female (though appears masculine)
Canon Point: March 21, 2012. True Ending
Character Canon History: Her Wiki Entry, here!
Character Personality: Naoto strives to follow in the footsteps of her late parents and become the next in the Shirogane line of world-famous detective, solving the unsolvable. With around two dozen solved cases under her belt, there is nothing presumably going wrong in her life on the outside: She is a no-nonsense person who strives for perfection. So long as the case is solved, Naoto achieves what she feels is true happiness, the satisfaction of a job well done and another criminal behind bars, and refuses to rest until all the pieces fall into place to bring about this conclusion.
But such greatness involved sacrifice: Most police officers and detectives, along with the detectives in her favorite novels, were older males. Only 16 and female, Naoto decided that the only way any of her peers would take her seriously in a very male-oriented society was to deepen her voice, dress more masculine, and improve her vocabulary. What we meet is a perfectionist acting nearly twice her age with a tightly-guarded secret that could destroy her reputation and career in her eyes, a person so accustomed to pushing people away that she becomes inept at making friends and becomes oblivious to social cues that most others would find second-nature. Yet nothing could disguise her youth and stature, and she was still regarded as a 'brat' and treated like a child by her peers, leaving this ace detective frustrated and incredibly insecure.
Then, her kidnapping occurred and she finds herself face to face with her Shadow, a manifestation of her deepest desires. She meets two halves of the same coin: A weeping, lonely child who desires acceptance for what she truly is, yearns for a place to fit in and hates being discarded once her peers have no further need of her mind, and a loud, bitter, egotistical adult who tires of the simple-minded people she works with and their treatment of her. While at first she turns a cold shoulder, assuming this strange clone to be a copy and little more (another testament to how, despite being the closest thing to a genius, she can still be incredibly dense), when faced with the harsh truth that this is how she truly feels and pretending to be a boy will not solve everything, she at first outright denies the existence of these hidden feelings.
But this proved to be a major turning point in her life. When she realizes that, yes, she does tire of how others treat her and is frustrated with the fact that her age and sex could get in the way of her dream, she could perhaps see a way to rise above it someday. It will be a long, uphill battle, but it is a battle that she is willing to accept.
And this, in turn, gives us the Naoto we know today: An ace detective that aims not only to be true to herself, but rise above a male-oriented society in the police force; a girl very slowly coming to grips with her femininity and all-around levels of comfort around other people despite their knowing her true gender, along with realizing that she's still a kid deep down. Her unyielding loyalty to her new friends, her dedication, and her desire to not only see a case to its conclusion but to have a place to stay afterward, when she isn't Detective Shirogane but Naoto Shirogane the individual, see her life on a continual upswing.
Naoto's the next in a long line of famous detectives. Groomed from a very young age by her grandfather, she embraces her lineage, and in doing so developed a skill in deductive reasoning. A case that is considered unsolvable by police, even if the trail is mostly cold, Naoto will find that missing piece that blows the case wide open, or ask the questions nobody else had thought to.
In her line of work, she's well-practiced in her ability to wield pistols. Though she will not draw her gun with intent to kill, she will draw her weapon in self-defense, aiming to primarily disarm.
Naoto loves gadgets. Ever since she was little, she found herself flexing her mind regularly in building little detective tools for later use. She's built small radios (into a knife), altered watches with radar functions or lights with intent to briefly blind pursuers, and other very bizarre yet handy tools. She's embarrassed to admit she can make 'such childish things', however.
Growing up with an alternate identity, even after accepting her Shadow, still grants her a bit of insecurity and discomfort that she is working to grow out of. She still chooses to dress in a masculine manner because that is what she's most accustomed to, and deepen her voice when necessary, even if she feels that she shouldn't act like a boy as much as she used to. Old habits die hard, especially when facing strangers, so individuals who wish to grow close to her do need to be advised that this 'boy' they may be getting friendly (or very friendly) with isn't who they think 'he' is. An easy way to make her extremely uncomfortable is to insist she act more 'girly' or dress more 'girly'.
Naoto is still very, very blunt. While most would sugar-coat the facts or talk around an uncomfortable subject, Naoto outright doesn't believe in softening the blow, and would rather strike right to the heart of an issue or not mince words. This can piss a lot of people off, or create the assumption that she doesn't care or have any sympathies.
On that note, social interactions are still very new to her, even months after making her very first friends back in Inaba. As stated before, a lot of social cues are second-nature to your average person, but Naoto still struggles with ways to interact with people that doesn't come off as blunt, insulting, or alienating the person she speaks with in a clash of intellectual levels. She doesn't know what friends are 'supposed' to do in the day to day, for instance, so accustomed to working and living solo that this is something she needs to learn, among many other normalcies of having a social life.
Lastly, Naoto is a sentimental person. If something has some form of value to her, she would rather hold on to it than part with it. Though not necessarily a weakness, to lose such important things are unthinkable, igniting a single-minded drive to find what was lost should that be the case, ignoring all else unless someone were to talk her down. For someone who hunts down physical evidence, it's no surprise she's a bit of a magpie.

Naoto coughed as quietly as she could into her sleeve, before continuing her notes.
‘Day 14:
Yamato Sumeragi still unstable, barely able to contact; or when I do, he manifests and is not under my control; this has increased since day 7. Flu like symptoms increasing since day 12; coughing and over all lethargy becoming more distinct…’
Coughing again, Naoto sighed deeply, before slumping forward onto her desk, using her arms as a pillow to rest her head upon. Ugh, why was she doing this to herself? Wasn’t it proof enough of the situation when Yamato Sumeragi first became quiet? And then popped out infront of a non-persona user while not even in the TV world? And yet she continued to withdraw from any form of physical contact, pointedly avoiding people who would do it without a second thought (such as Rise-chan), all in the effort for a more ‘scientific method’ approach, to truly understand the limits of these ‘conditions’.
Naoto paused on that thought for a moment, before closing her eyes. Was it all honestly just to ‘understand’ these conditions, or a more petty, childish thing; a stubborn attempt to not go along with what she was being ‘told’ to do, to subject herself to physical contact just to alleviate these feelings. Naoto was a private person after all, and to be mandated to touch someone as to not be sick rubbed her the wrong way.
Pulling her hat further down her face, the Detective Prince let out another cough, and groaned; whether it rubbed her the wrong way or not, was it really worth putting up with this sickness just to prove a point? And what point after all? That she was unwilling to adapt to a new situation?
Besides, it wasn’t as if whoever brought them here under these conditions were demanding she… do something ‘intimate’, after all. A hug, a handshake, that was all that was required.
Glancing towards her phone already configuredto work with the network, Naoto tapped her finger against her desk. Rise-chan, Souji-senpai, Kanji-kun… she could call any of them up right now, and just end this already; they’d surely understand, wouldn’t they…?
